It all begins with a throwback of memories. When I was a teaching assistant in SFAI, I treated my class with boxes of dim sum and take-out dishes bought from Chinatown. The students got fascinated by the food of great variety, and many of them were introduced to those dishes for the very first time. They ended up eating everything with no leftover in the boxes!
It was a heartfelt memory that people enjoyed the food of my culture. But it also makes me wonder: Chinatown is only 3 blocks away from our school, why do my schoolmates barely explore the area and the potential delicious food? What could be the undesirable blockages of that?
“Have you eaten” is a common phrase that Chinese people like to use for greeting just like “How are you”, and it indicates how eating and food are deep-rooted in Chinese culture. This phrase is well representing our warm welcome towards people of diversity from the Chinatown community.
