How it begins

It all begins with a throwback of memories. When I was a teaching assistant in SFAI, I treated my class with boxes of dim sum and take-out dishes bought from Chinatown. The students got fascinated by the food of great variety, and many of them were introduced to those dishes for the very first time. They ended up eating everything with no leftover in the boxes!

It was a heartfelt memory that people enjoyed the food of my culture. But it also makes me wonder: Chinatown is only 3 blocks away from our school, why do my schoolmates barely explore the area and the potential delicious food? What could be the undesirable blockages of that?

Historical facts
How food initiated the first step of inclusion for Chinese community in the American society:
Chinese American has used food to fight exclusion and preserve our legacy.”
“For generation our food has been a source of survival and resistance.”
The dish was both Americanized and Chinese, making both Chinese food and Chinese people a little less threatening to the Americans.”
Status Quo
The invisible wall between Chinatown and its outside still exists for part of the community.
Many people of Chinese ethnicity who lives in Chinatown still face major obstacles due to language barrier. They may own or work for small businesses often of restaurant or grocery, and they hardly prepare to accommodate customers who don’t speak Chinese. Under the harsh circumstance of COVID-19, the disadvantages are further revealed when the small businesses got crashed due to limited understanding and supports.
